002 - the turtleneck
Updated: May 13, 2020
What do Andy Warhol, Sean Connery, Steve Jobs, Future, & The 'Hoff have in common?
They all know how to harness the power of the turtleneck.

Not Just for Grandpas!
The oft-ignored turtleneck is one of the most timeless and versatile pieces in your wardrobe - from a winter ski weekend to a summer wine tasting, it's the sweater for the job. Try layering with a formal or casual jacket for a comfortable yet sharp all-day look that transitions smoothly from the office to client dinners and beyond.
Color
It's all about contrast here - think about creating interesting combinations with the rest of your outfit. Try black or grey with a dark blue blazer, white with a brown leather jacket, or neon/pastel tones for a pop of brightness. Playing with similar shades can also work really nicely for a unique take on seasonal tones (see left).
Weight
If you're buying your first turtleneck, opt for something light-to-medium weight (think merino wool or lightweight cashmere) to maximize seasonal versatility - heavy cable-knit turtlenecks (a la Drake) are super cozy in colder months but will look out of place come May.
Neck Height
Personally I'm a big fan of the classic high rollneck - very 90s Pierce Brosnan, with the added benefit of accentuating your jawline. Opt for a lower neck for a classic 80s vibe, or something in the middle for an all-season winner at any price point. UNIQLO often has great versions on sale for under 20 bucks - can't beat that.
